Class Description:

Capoeira is an African-Brazilian art form that combines dance, martial arts, music, acrobatics, and self-defense. African slaves in Brazil created Capoeira over 400 years ago as a way to defend themselves and maintain their culture in the face of the harsh and oppressive conditions of slavery. Capoeira is practiced throughout the world and is still used as a tool to empower and strengthen individuals.

The Capoeira game or jogo is practiced inside a roda, (circle of participants), where two players exchange kicks, sweeps, escapes, floor and acrobatic movements. The songs and musical instruments -- Berimbau (stringed bow), Atabaque (drum), Pandeiro (tambourine) -- set the tone and rhythm of the game.

This class is open to all levels. Students will learn basic Capoeira moves and techniques as well as the instruments and songs of the art.  In addition to receiving the immense physical benefits of training – strength, flexibility, endurance, body awareness – students will also gain an understanding of Capoeira’s historical context.

*The NEW BEGINNERS CAPOEIRA CLASS will cover:

•   Basic knowledge of Capoeira movements, music & history
•   Promote weight loss and fitness
•   Understanding of movement and flow
