“Spex” Abbiw is a gifted dancer, performer, choreographer, and artist
who has 0emerged and established himself as a creative force within the
hip hop/street dance community. This New York City born native has
served as a vanguard for the preservation of the history and evolution
of the art form of hip hop dance for a remarkable 20 years and has
collaborated with several of hip hop’s pioneers and innovators among
dance, music, and theater. This graduate of New York’s acclaimed Art
School of Design initial introduction to the hip hop at the height of
its explosion in 1988, would ignite his enthusiasm and lifelong
commitment to hip hop dance and culture forging himself onto an
astonishing career that would lead him to collaborations with notable
artists such as pop star, Mariah Carey, and hip hop performers, Lauryn
Hill and Wyclef John just to name a few. Spex’s standout ability and
performances would lead to international tours throughout Japan and
Europe as a featured dancer and highly sought after teacher. In 2002,
Spex would further his evolving artistic abilities by making his acting
debut in Off Broadway’s , highly acclaimed, hip hop musical, Full
Circle’s Productions Soular’d Power as a featured performer, dancer and
actor.
As an advocate of the preservation of the hip hop and urban dance
culture, Spex would become one of the founding owners of the House Dance
Conference, an event devoted exclusively to promote the education and
celebration of all forms of urban dance and to elevation of the
awareness of the underground dance culture influence on the pulse of
society. Spex has also continued to emerge as an acclaimed and sought
after dance instructor in New York’s Broadway Dance Center to uphold the
legacy of hip hop and to continue to remain on the forefront of this
culture. This standout performer, dancer, and choreographer continues to
set his sights on the development of highly innovative works that relate
to an ever evolving audience the power of urban dance and culture.

Class Description:
Locking or Campbellocking ( as it was originally known ) is a dance
style that was created by Don "Campbellock" Campbell in the late 1960's
and was made popular by The Original Lockers in the early 1970's.This
class is designed to show students the basic and fundamental components
of the Locking dance style, based on the influence and techniques of The
Original Lockers. So come out to learn these fundamentals and have
fun with the funk of the music.
