J LYN • African Diaspora Dance
J Lyn Thomas is a multifaceted artist with a BA in Dance from the University of Colorado at Boulder and her MS in Dance/Movement Therapy from Pratt Institute. As a professional dancer and choreographer, J Lyn has choreographed and performed around the world for artists like LL Cool J, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Davido, Tiwa Savage, WizKid, Cee Lo Green, and for productions such as America's Got Talent, Step Up 3D, and BET's Black Girls Rock.
J Lyn has spent over 20 years educating communities on the history, culture, and technique of social dances from the African Diaspora for the purpose of building community, strengthening interpersonal relationship skills, and providing cross-cultural awareness. She has taught at universities, schools, nonprofits, and companies throughout the US and around the world. Some of her work includes being a resident instructor at the University of Ghana's School of Dance in Accra, Ghana and instructing Syracuse University Dance Department's first Hip Hop curriculum.
Class Description
From Azonto from Ghana to Litefeet from America to Amapiano dances from South Africa, this class explores social dances throughout the African Diaspora. This high-energy, welcoming class begins with a dynamic warm-up and flows into technique, history, and culture exploration. Each class will include freestyle exploration and will culminate with a fun choreography combination.
